The Complete Garden Design Process

From first conversation to finished design

Every exceptional garden begins long before the first paving stone is laid or the first plant goes into the ground.

A successful garden is the result of careful planning, thoughtful collaboration and a design process that considers every detail before construction begins. While every project is unique, following a structured approach ensures the finished garden not only looks beautiful, but functions seamlessly and stands the test of time.

Whether you're transforming a newly built garden or completely reimagining an established landscape, here's what you can expect from the journey.

"Every successful project begins by understanding the people who will use the space."

01

Discovery & Initial Consultation

This first conversation is all about you.

We'll discuss how you currently use your garden, what isn't working, what inspires you and how you'd like the space to feel. We'll also explore practical considerations such as budget, timescales and the overall vision for your project.

Rather than arriving with preconceived ideas, the aim is to understand your lifestyle and uncover the opportunities your garden presents.

02

Site Survey & Analysis

Great design begins with understanding the site.

Measurements, levels, existing features, drainage, surrounding views, sunlight, soil conditions and access are all carefully considered before any design work begins.

These technical foundations allow creative ideas to be developed with confidence.

03

2D Concept Design

This is where the transformation begins to take shape.

Initial concepts explore the layout of the garden, relationships between different spaces and the overall atmosphere the design will create.

Rather than focusing on individual materials, the concept establishes how the garden will feel and function as a whole.

3D Visuals

Photorealistic 3D visuals allow you to see exactly how your future garden will look and feel.

They help communicate scale, privacy, materials and atmosphere, giving you complete confidence before construction begins and providing the opportunity to refine any final details.

05

Planting Design

Once the layout has been finalised, we develop a planting plan that complements the architecture and materials of the garden.

Every planting scheme is designed to provide structure, texture, accommodate your lifestyle and year-round interest while responding to the site's unique conditions.

06

Technical Plans

With the design complete, we produce a comprehensive set of technical drawings that communicate every aspect of the project clearly.

These plans provide contractors with the information they need to price and build the garden, reducing uncertainty during construction and helping to ensure the original design intent is maintained.

Studio Visit & Construction Handover

The completed design is presented during a dedicated studio meeting, where we'll guide you through every drawing, visual and specification.

You'll leave with a comprehensive design package containing everything required to bring the design to life, giving both you and the chosen landscaper complete clarity before work begins.
